Today at Portland's No Fish! Go Fish! they served me their signature namesake dish, little fish shaped sandwiches, burnt. They're usually good. I even tried one to make sure it wasn't some new blackening thing, but alas, they were just burnt.

The nice young lady serving me asked if I wanted to take them home with me. I told her "no thanks, they were burnt". She apologized (but still took the money). I said "don't worry about it", but I really hope they do.

On our way home, Kim told me that you're supposed to say something about that before you get the check or when they first check in with you.

I told her that we were the only ones in the restaurant.

I told her that someone took those burnt sandwiches and put them on the plate.

They then gave that plate to another employee who had to look at them at least for a second.

After that, they brought that plate to me and charged me money for what was on it.

If burnt sandwiches that looked like that made it all the way through that process, I don't think I or anyone involved had anything to discuss at that moment on that day. What would be the point?

I noticed later that the restaurant is holding a writing contest. I don't think I'll read anything that makes it through their judging process. I'm sure you understand.

I honestly can't remember the last time I used a cassette or VHS tape for anything. I've even given away all of my CD's and most of my DVD's at this point. Physical media is so last century...

I worked at a music distribution company last week and saw a ton of future landfill material:

I used to play in a band and can remember trying so hard to get one of these distributors to carry my CD. So many hours spent on the dream of getting our little space on one of those shelves. Now it all just looked sad.

I really, really used to love cassettes. I loved making mix tapes and working with the limitations in duration and actually having to take care of something if I wanted it to last. Now if I lose anything I can just download it again. Come to think of it, good fucking riddance.

Speaking of nostalgia (which is all I ever do since I was an early bloomer) I saw the first computer I ever had across the street from my house in a thrift shop. The Atari 400.

I absolutely loved that thing. I'm pretty sure my current toothbrush has more processing power, but in 1981 it was pretty awesome for a eight year old. I used it to learn how to program little things in BASIC. I remember trying to write a program so that I could talk to it. BASIC as a language wasn't that advanced or my understanding of it was rudimentary at best. I could make it ask me how my day was, but I had to be exact and could only make it respond with "that's nice" or "that's too bad", we couldn't exactly shoot the shit. That type of programming was better suited for the Choose Your Own Adventure type story games I would make for myself. It was kinda lame as I knew all the variables being the head muckety-muck of programming and all.

One of the best things I ever did with it was learn my states and capitals with the game "States and Capitals". The game came on cassette tape.

Today was Kim and I's one year anniversary. We spent the day making art projects for our walls and watching the NFL playoffs. Tonight we're going to dinner and a movie. I think we're going to see Back To The Future down the street. Kim's never seen it on a big screen before. As far as my future goes, I'm pretty sure there's ice cream involved, anything beyond that gets cloudy.

It seems we've seen the last of Wes Welker's snow angel-making exploits on NFL Sundays.

The New England Patriots wide receiver has been fined $10,000 by the NFL for exactly that.

"It was a spur of the moment deal, and you can be sure that it won't happen again," Welker was quoted as saying on The Boston Globe's Web site.

Welker was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct Sunday for making a snow angel just beyond the end line after his touchdown in the first half of New England's 47-7 rout of the Arizona Cardinals.

According to The Globe, Welker said he wasn't certain if he'd file an appeal.

League spokesman Corry Rush said Welker was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct for participation in an illegal demonstration by going to the ground.

Following Sunday's victory, Welker said, "I just got a little bit too excited there. I really didn't think it would be a penalty. I wouldn't have done it if I thought it was."

An elderly man opened fire on fans at a Senegal rap concert he believed were making fun of him by singing a song about cranky old men, police say.

The 70-year-old began shooting with a hunting rifle at Lobaly village in the Matam region at the weekend.
Police say the gunman warned fans to stop singing "Pa' Tang Xol" (Angry Old Men) by popular Senegalese artist Baaba Mal before opening fire.

Five people were taken to hospital and two were seriously injured, say police.

Concert-goers had been listening to warm-up music before the live act at the gig on the border with Mauritania, 700km (440 miles) from the Senegalese capital Dakar.

The man took offence when he heard the Wolof language track's lyrics and told the fans to stop singing it. When they did not, he opened fire four times, said police.

"The elderly gentleman felt that these young people were insulting him in their songs," a policeman told Reuters news agency. The gunman was reportedly arrested.

One police source said that his own children were in the crowd but they were not injured.

A nude model resembling the Virgin Mary appearing in the December issue of Playboy Magazine in Mexico has caused a large controversy, reported Reuters. The model posed wearing nothing but a white cloth over her head with the phrase, “We Love You, Maria,” written across a stain glass window. The model’s name is Maria. The issue hit newsstands on December 1, five days before a festival celebrating the Virgin Mary.

Playboy Enterprises Inc., based in Chicago, issued a statement claiming, “While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies.”

The publisher of Playboy Mexico, stated, “The image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover.”

Kim brought home some weird powder stuff that you mix with water to make pretty convincing looking fake snow to go above our fireplace. She then made a little snowman with peppercorns for eyes. Today my "almost mater" (I didn't finish High School) The Astoria High School Fighting Fisherman won the Oregon State 4A Football Championship. I saw some people that I went to school with, but only from afar. Everyone seemed fat. They looked like my old classmates, only stung by bees.
